I don’t really like Halloween, in fact, I pretty much hate it. It is an ugly holiday; it is dark and filled with creepy creatures, and boast of colors of black and orange, colors I would NEVER put together…because I like pretty things…
However, I know these holidays are important to children, and I really like my children…so I hosted a party and invited all the AIM staff and all the REAL LIFE team, and the Swazi discipleship team. I am very impressed with all the costumes, considering there is no Wal-mart, Target or Good-Will to rummage through to find creative goodies. They all showed up full of life and looking ridiculous in a fabulous way. We had a contest for the best costumes, ate dinner, and laughed, A LOT….Swazi’s have not heard of trick or Treating…so we taught them and they loved it. Unfortunately they will be describing it to there friends and family today and it will sound something like this…. ” yes, this American holiday is very fun, you dress up in strange costumes and go to peoples houses for dinner, then after dinner the owners of the house go to different rooms in the house and shut the door, you have to knock on the door of (their bedroom or bathroom) and they open it, and act like they have never seen you before and give you candy, FOR FREE, then you keep going from one door to the next until they run out of candy….”
No, it was not our traditional holiday and I wish the Grandparents could have seen how cute their grandchildren were, but we did educate some Swazi’s, and we did have a great time. Even if we had to pretend our house was an entire neighborhood…here’s to holidays….Swazi Style…!
